Newspaper Archive Usage Rules

These volumes are the only archive copy of the Salem Times-Commoner and some companion publications known to exist.

These procedures are designed to preserve this precious resource. Handle the materials very carefully.


*A volunteer staff member (provided by Marion County Genealogical and Historical Society) must be present during use of the materials. The materials may not be taken from the room.


*Plan your research. It is essential that you have specific dates and time frames you want to research. The materials are not indexed in any way. The only organization is by publication date.


*Note that these materials DO have dust and mold on them. Please plan accordingly.


*NO food or drinks are allowed on the table with the materials, including water.


*Do not make marks or use tape of any kind on the materials. Do not remove any pages or articles from the books. Do not fold edges or mark the materials in any way.


*You are welcome to copy articles by a photo or scan (e.g. with your phone). They can be printed at the circulation desk using email. Prices for printing are $0.50 for color and $0.20 for black and white.
